Critics of the program claim that H-1B holders are frequently selected for positions over U.S. residents, despite the fact that many tech companies have embraced the program, which permits U.S. corporations to hire foreign workers in specialized fields.

Trump H-1b visa requirements

The H-1B visa program allows U.S. employers to hire foreign workers in specialty occupations requiring specialized knowledge and a bachelor’s degree or higher. The standard duration of stay under an H-1B visa is three years, extendable up to six years, with certain exceptions permitting further extensions.

H-1Bs are employed in a wide range of industries, including architecture, medicine, education, business, law, theology, and the arts, in addition to IT companies that use them to hire engineers and other comparable jobs. Each year, the United States grants 65,000 of these visas, plus an additional 20,000 to workers who have earned a master’s degree or higher from an American university. The American Immigration Council reports that in 2023, over 700,000 individuals were in possession of H-1B visas. They can be renewed for a maximum of six years after their initial three-year validity.
